Crystal Moinichen: A Journey of Fire, Family, and Fierce Determination

When Crystal Moinichen first stepped into the world of emergency services, she was hooked. Her journey began in EMS, but it was a fire standby call that ignited a lifelong passion. “I saw everything they were doing, and I was absolutely just hooked,” she recalls. That moment in 2006 in a small Minnesota town sparked a career that would span states, challenges, and personal transformation.

Crystal’s path wasn’t easy. In the early days, firefighting was still very much a “good old boys club,” and opportunities were scarce unless you had the right connections. But she persisted, eventually moving to Wyoming in 2013, where she earned her degree in fire science and began building a career that felt like home.

Stepping Away to Start a Family

In the midst of her rising career, Crystal faced a deeply personal challenge. Her doctor advised that reducing stress would improve her chances of starting a family, and that meant stepping away from the fire service. “It was hard,” she admits. “Fire is a part of you. I missed it the whole time.”

Her sacrifice paid off. In 2022, Crystal welcomed her daughter Riley, followed by her son Carson nearly two years later. But even as she embraced motherhood, the fire service never left her heart. “I felt like such a large part of me was gone,” she says. “Once I got cleared after our second kiddo, it was go time.”

The Road Back

Crystal’s return hasn’t been simple. Minnesota’s certification rules meant she had to retake courses she’d already completed. Now, she’s juggling her education—working toward a bachelor’s in emergency management and recertifying in Firefighter II and Hazmat Ops—while working 36 hours a week on an ambulance and raising two young children.

And yet, she’s thriving.

Her hometown of is launching a new fire department, Otsego Fire, and Crystal is determined to be part of it. “It’s an amazing opportunity to help start something from the ground up,” she says. “Very few people get that chance.”

Finding Strength in Competition

To rebuild her fitness and reconnect with the fire community, Crystal turned to Firefighter Challenge competitions. She first competed in 2016 at FDIC and even organized the Minnesota Combat Challenge in 2018. “It tests you mentally and physically,” she says. “It pushes you in ways you don’t get pushed otherwise.”

This year, she returned to FDIC and the Midwest Challenge, with even bigger goals for next season—including national qualifiers and possibly the East Regional in Ohio.

Ricochet: More Than Just Gear

One major hurdle Crystal faced was gear. Not being active on a department meant she didn’t have access to turnout gear for competition. That’s when she reached out to Ricochet.

“They didn’t hesitate,” she says. “They have supported me every step of the way. Ricochet has become more like family.”

She praises the gear’s fit and mobility, especially its design for women. “Even custom sets I’ve had before weren’t built for a woman’s body. Ricochet’s gear gives me the dexterity and mobility I need. It’s by far the best I’ve worn.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

Crystal’s journey is more than personal—it’s generational. Her daughter Riley already imitates her mom’s moves, doing hose hoists and dummy drags with toys. “She’s not even three yet,” Crystal laughs. “But she’s watching me. She’s learning to be strong and capable.”

To other parents considering firefighting, Crystal offers simple advice: “Just go for it. The fire service is a family. You’ll be supported, and your kids will see you doing something powerful. That’s the best example you can give.”
