For Jon Fleming, what began as a dare in 2009 has turned into a longtime passion. A volunteer firefighter from Pennsylvania, Jon first entered the Firefighter Combat Challenge as a way to stay fit and try something unique.
“A friend said, ‘We’re going to do this,’ and then backed out. I didn’t,” Jon recalls.
That decision launched a journey that has taken him across the country—and even overseas—competing in the most demanding athletic event in the fire service.
A Season of Achievements
- FDIC Kickoff: 3rd place in the 50–60 individual division
- Northeast Regionals:
- 2nd place individual (50–60)
- 2nd place male tandem (50–60)
- 2nd place male tandem under 40 with a state record
- 1st place relay male (50–60) with a state record
- World Championships: 3rd place co-ed tandem (50–60)
“Worlds is always a favorite,” Jon says. “You get to see friends from all over the world. It’s a full week of competition and camaraderie.”
His Ricochet Partnership
“It moves with you, not against you,” Jon explains.
“It’s the most tailored gear I’ve ever worn, and the wicking capabilities keep me dry even during full exertion in the heat.”
Why Gear Matters
Comfort and mobility aren’t just perks—they’re essential.
“Unrestricted movement is key in the fire service, whether you’re competing or on a live fire call,” Jon emphasizes.
“When you’re comfortable, you’re less stressed. With Ricochet gear, I feel safe and focused on the task at hand.”
Looking Ahead
Jon’s goals for 2026 are clear: set a new personal record and stay competitive in the 50–60 category. With events lined up from Akron to Erie and Worlds in Las Vegas, he’s ready for another exciting year. His advice for newcomers?
“Try it once. It’s grueling, but the long-term health benefits are immeasurable. Plus, the friendships you build make it all worthwhile.”
